A full circle
My Father started my photographic journey when he gave me a Leica CL rangefinder in the 1970’s. Having subsequently shot with SLR’s like the Leica SL, SL2, R4, and DSLR’s like the Canon 5D MkII, I have come full circle back to a rangefinder, the Leica M10 Monochrom. It shoots black and white only, and I use my Father’s Leica glass from the 1970’s and 1980’s. A tactile camera, it requires patience, a relearning process that makes you feel like a student again. There is an old world timelessness in its handling which connects you to the great 20th century photographers. The rangefinder slows you down, encouraging you to look more carefully and to frame the composition more precisely. Shooting manual only and with such a restricted palette, the results can be astounding, detailed and beautiful. It is a piece of precision machinery which makes you want to be a better photographer.
